Juan C. Gutierrez, M.D., serves as Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program at AdventHealth Ocala. A native of upstate New York, Dr. Gutierrez earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Rensselear Polytechnic Institute and his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his internship and residency training in general surgery at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. Gutierrez spent several years as a general surgeon in private practice in North Miami before electing to pursue additional surgical training. He completed a bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Orlando Regional Medical Center. During residency training, Dr. Gutierrez spent an additional two years dedicated to clinical and basic science research, and has continued such investigational efforts throughout his career. He has presented his work in both general and bariatric surgery at various national meetings and been published in multiple journals including Cancer, Annals of Surgery, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Journal of Surgical Research, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Obesity Surgery. Dr. Gutierrez is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Central Florida. He is an active member of multiple groups and societies, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, the Obesity Medicine Association, and the Florida Medical Association. He is fluent in Spanish and spends his free time enjoying the many outdoor activities available in North and Central Florida.
