About the Provider

Dr. Browne is an ABOM certified pediatric weight management physician. He graduated from Brown University with an A.B. in Human Biology in 1967 and from George Washington University School of Medicine with an M.D. in 1971. He did a rotating surgical internship at the Maine Medical Center in 1971-72 and then served in the U. S. Army for three years as a general
medical officer from 1972-1975. He received training in general surgery from 1975-79 at the Maine Medical Center, in pediatric surgery from 1979-1980 at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and in pediatric surgery from 1980-1982 at Columbus Children’s Hospital. He is board certified in general surgery and in pediatric surgery. After practicing and teaching pediatric surgery at the University of Vermont and the Maine Medical Center from 1982-2004 he moved to the University of Illinois at Chicago and Rush University, and he co-founded the New Hope Pediatric and Adolescent Weight Management Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2005 he became PI of IDE #1 with the FDA for “A Study of the Adjustable Gastric Band in Adolescents with Morbid Obesity”. In 2008 he moved to Nationwide Children”s Hospital, was on the staff of the Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition, and was an investigator for the TEEN-LABS Study. In 2013 he founded the Pediatric Weight Management Clinic at the
Carle Clinic in Urbana, Illinois. In 2014, he started yearly attendance at the Blackburn Obesity Course at Harvard University and became certified in obesity medicine by ABOM. In 2016 he retired from pediatric surgery and focused full-time on pediatric weight management, education about the disease of obesity, and advocacy for children with the disease of obesity.
