Charge

In alignment with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) mission to elevate global health and quality of life by significantly reducing the impact of obesity and its related illnesses, the General and Foregut Surgery Committee is charged with developing evidence-based guidelines and identifying unique diagnostic and treatment strategies required for the management of general surgical and foregut disease in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures.

Description

The General and Foregut Surgery Committee aims to improve the care and treatment of people suffering from obesity by advancing the science and understanding of metabolic and bariatric surgery, serving the educational and professional needs of the Society’s diverse membership.

Objectives

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the incidence, prevalence and types of common general surgical and foregut conditions in patients before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery.
  • Establish and disseminate guidelines and protocols for the management of general surgical and foregut problems before and after metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Goals

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of literature and data to determine the prevalence and types of general surgical and foregut problems in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery.
  • Develop evidence-based guidelines and protocols for the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of general surgical and foregut problems in patients undergoing metabolic and bariatric surgery.

  • Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) and NSAID Use after MBS Review – Draft in progress.
